Proventil Drug Class and Mechanism

Proventil contains the active ingredient Salbutamol, which is a type of medicine known as a short-acting beta 2 agonist. It works by acting on receptors in the lungs called beta 2 receptors. Stimulation of these receptors causes the muscles in the airways to relax, allowing the airways to open.

Salbutamol is specifically indicated in the following conditions: acute asthma symptom relief during maintenance therapy of asthma and other conditions with reversible airways obstruction (including COPD) protection against exercise-induced asthma hyperkalaemia, especially in patients with renal failure can be aerosolized with a nebulizer for patients with cystic fibrosis, along with ipratropium bromide and pulmozyme. As a ?2-agonist, salbutamol also finds use in obstetrics. Intravenous salbutamol can be used as a tocolytic to relax the uterine smooth muscle to delay premature labour. Whilst preferred over agents such as atosiban and ritodrine, its role has largely been replaced by the calcium-channel blocker nifedipine which is more effective, better tolerated and orally administered

Proventil Side Effects

The most common side effects of labetalol are fatigue, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, edema (fluid accumulation), dry eyes, and tingling of the scalp and skin. Postural hypotension (a rapid decrease in blood pressure when going from the lying or seated position to the standing position that may cause light-headedness or fainting) occurs rarely. Patients should be observed for this possible side effect within two to four hours of the first labetalol dose and after any changes in dose. Sexual dysfunction, abnormal heart rhythm and difficulty breathing also may occur.

Proventil should not be taken with beta-blockers, such as atenolol, propranolol or timolol. This is because beta-blockers have an opposite action to this medicine and cause the airways to narrow. This can result in breathing difficulties for people with asthma or COPD. This problem has sometimes been seen with eye drops containing beta-blockers, eg. used for glaucoma.
